How are Square Enix's internal localizations? The ones by Brian Gray and Alexander O. Smith were pretty good I think.

i think they're all a pretty solid cut above the crowd. SE can afford to cultivate quality, though

Any examples of "bad" localization you can think of aside from DR1/2?

lux pain's was so bad even reviewers noticed

What are the best and worst parts of fansubbing for you? And not counting the leechers/etc. what is the other worst part?

the best part: editing
the worst part: things that aren't editing

Do people not realize that defending literal translations means also defending the original scripts which may or may not have been shit in the first place? Writing quality is an issue regardless of language.

it's just another facet of orientalism where anything from japan is automatically superior to our barbaric english writing

Can the original Japanese script in a game be crappy in the first place? Perhaps localization is necessary in order to make it less stilted and boring.

yes. this is quite common, really
from all reports the japanese scripts to FF6, CT, etc weren't nearly as memorable

Do people actually sing along to karaoke in fansub OPs/EDs or is it just for them to follow with their eyes in pleasure?

i hope no one does but it's not my business what people get up to in the privacy of their own homes

Do people usually get up early to fansub?

no idea. most fansubbers i know live in america / europe / etc. where anime airs during normal people hours

Does learning Japanese through anime make you learn a weird brand of Japanese that makes actual Japanese people laugh at you?

quite possibly. you need to participate in proper conversation with real people to get an idea of what kind of stuff is actually said in real life.

What aspects of Japanese culture do you dislike?

socially, they're still pretty behind in a lot of ways
it's not my place to criticise it too heavily without understanding their circumstances but there are a lot of disappointing aspects

Heard about how Rena Strober's getting harassed by NicheGamer because they maliciously took her words out of context? Fuck them and fuck GG seriously.

yeah. i sure am glad we have websites like nichegamer to show us what ethical journalism looks like

>zoid teaching his students to translate manga as comics. Damn I forgot zoid did stuff for Commie in the past! The memecartel strikes irl.

he hasn't (besides TLCing the Sympho G BDs for me) and I think that's just how they're taught in general since students in Japan learn normal English and not anime fan English

What kind of background do professional non-CR translators have?

language studies? prior work? everyone is different, so how would i know

Since nyaa is down, I can't really check... So, what days does ERASED usually get released for you at Commie?

friday

Where do you draw the line between "literate" and "illiterate"?

literate = can read and write
illiterate = cannot read and write

Sup. Have you ever used the expression believe you me? Will people say I'm pretentious for using it specially since I'm a ESL?

i've never heard it before but apparently it's archaic english? not sure why you'd need to use it now

Does a group leader actually do anything?

depends on the group. the ones where the leader does nothing are usually the ones where stuff gets delayed indefinitely all the time
