Do you feel like fansubbing is slowly dying out? As in, groups doing less shows each year, etc. It seems like after this season there'll be less groups doing stuff.
It's a pretty objective fact that fansub participation is in decline. One look at the fansubdb page for say fall 2014, fall 2013, fall 2012 and so on should tell you that. That doesn't mean the individual efforts of those who are still around are any less worthwhile, though.

Can't go wrong with something neutral like Open, Source, Stone, or Quattrocentro Sans, really. I'm not sure how srt margins work but I usually use around 35-42 vertical for a 720p release (in .ass styling) and 100-150 horizontal on either side.

What does Commie's bot do? I know it releases stuff on Nyaa, the site and IRC but other than that? I think I read it also does the muxing but I'm not sure. Do other groups have similar bots?
Basically everything that can be automated, but most importantly it tracks the progress of each release (what stage it's at, who's responsible) and handles the entire release progress including an automated sanity check, muxing, distro via xdcc and torrents, and posting the release on the blog, NT, etc. As far as I'm aware no other group has anything quite like it.

* QC (both the 'read the script and leave comments for the editor' kind, and the 'watch the finished product to fine tune timing and text placement and fix any obvious errors' kind)

This isn't really in chronological order because for example you can time as soon as you have any kind of script (or even before, but I wouldn't advise it) and just update the timed script later.
